The time spent setting up and cleaning up can count as SSL hours, or scout service hours for advancements or applicable merit badges (remember to ask your scoutmaster and/or merit badge councilor for specifics first...).

Dress warmly in layers including hat and gloves. There is little protection from the wind on the field. Don’t wear fabric sneakers or cotton clothes!

Troop 1097 will support Antietam National Battlefield during this most somber yet beautiful event, the Memorial Illumination (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HjUxo4zk3Q or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTVAaQhyQZ8).

More than 23,000 candles will be lit and lined up along the battlefield to pay tribute to the soldiers who were killed, wounded, or reported missing at the noteworthy Battle of Antietam. A half hour drive through the battlefield just after dark will reveal seemingly endless rows of candles to symbolize the lives that were lost that September day. The Scouts (and family members who would also like to volunteer) will set up luminaries on "our field" throughout the day on December 2nd and spend the weekend camping at Antietam. SSL hours are available for this activity.

Scouts and family volunteers will begin the day by putting the candles into the luminaries. After that, they will arrange the bags in lines on the field. We’ll eat bag lunches provided by the troop, probably have an hour or two of free time, then we’ll light the candles. There will be a short ceremony at the Maryland Memorial at dusk, after which the volunteers will be the first to drive through and see the Illumination. After we drive through the Illumination, the troop will enjoy a reception featuring cookies and homemade soup at the Washington County Agricultural Center, where we’re camping. A Scout is helpful, so we’ll also be assisting the reception staff with clean up afterward.

DIRECTIONS TO CAMP: Follow signs to Calvert Cliffs State Park. Turn left, as if to go into the park entrance. Turn left again on Rt. 765. go one half mile (just past Middleham Chapel) and turn right onto Camp Conoy Road. Follow Camp Conoy Road to the end of the hard surface road and bear onto the dirt road. The entrance to Camp Bay Breeze will be about a quarter mile on the right.

What to wear: Comfortable clothing such as shorts and tshirts. No Jeans or sweats. Shoes must be secure on your feet. No flip flops or crocs. Wet suits are available for rent if needed.

You will be joining other groups. Please be considerate of our other guests. We can only wait a short period before we must depart for the launch area.

Lock all personal items in your car. Give keys to check in attendant.

After check-in, you will be issued your life jackets and helmets, meet your guide(s), and walk across the street to the launch area. There you will be assigned your crafts and receive a 15 minute safety talk up before launch.

Philmont 2027 High Adventure Trip!! (25 Jun 2027)

12-day trek arriving at Philmont in the range of June 27, 2027 (likely we will depart the 25th or 26th). A rough estimate of the cost is about $2600, all inclusive.

The Philmont Experience:

Philmont Scout Ranch offers a unique experience that is not risk‐free. Knowledgeable staff will instruct all participants in safety measures to be followed. Be prepared to listen to and carefully follow these safety measures and to accept responsibility for the health and safety of yourself and others.

Age Requirement

Participants must be registered members of the BSA who will be at least 14 years of age OR completed 8^th grade and be at least 13 years of age prior to participation.

Each participant must be able to carry a 35 to 50‐pound pack (approximately 25% to 30% of body weight) while hiking 5 to 12 miles per day in an isolated mountain wilderness ranging from 6,500 to 12,500 feet in elevation. Summer/autumn climatic conditions include temperatures from 30 to 100 degrees, low humidity (10 to 30 percent), and frequent, sometimes severe, afternoon thunderstorms. Activities include horseback riding, rock climbing and rappelling, challenge events, pole climbing, muzzle loading shooting, 12‐gauge trap shooting, .30‐06 shooting, trail building, mountain biking, and other activities that have potential for injury.

Philmont requires that all participants meet the height/weight limits found on the BSA Medical Form and on our website.
